Wiha manufactures hand tools for industry and the trades. Willi Hahn founded this company, which initially manufactured nuts and bolts, in Wuppertal in 1939. Within a few years, Wiha Tools set up its current headquarters in Schonach im Schwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, and began producing precision screwdrivers. A second plant was opened in Mönchweiler, followed by a U.S.A. subsidiary in 1985. Nowadays, Wiha has branches throughout Europe and in Canada, India and the Asia Pacific region; it supplies over 3,500 tool product lines such as torque wrenches and bit sets, hex keys (L-keys), hammers and an extensive choice of flat, round, needle or snipe-nosed pliers. Insulated hand tools are manufactured in accordance with DIN EN60900 standards. Although electrical work is best avoided on live systems, every single VDE tool is individually tested for safety. In addition, laboratory QA batch tests check deliberately damaged samples for durability, combustion behaviour and holding force. The VDE mark (Verband Deutscher Elektroingenieure, i.e. the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) for insulated tools confirms safety and that manufacturing sites have annual inspections. Finally, Wiha has won numerous prestigious prizes, including Red Dot and Best of the Best awards for its innovative approach, soft-grip ergonomic tool designs and its social commitment to employees.
